Jenny Lewis returns with her second solo project 'Acid Tongue'...
Opening track 'Black Sound' left me feeling pretty empty but 'Pretty Bird' comes in to remind me of what a prodigious talent Jenny really is. As delicate as a little bird 'Pretty' floats along, gliding this way and that, pulling you towards track three 'The Next Messiah', a thumping piece of country rock, which delivers its statement with heavy, glorious sarcasm.
'Godspeed' stands out as personal favorite, with Jenny's voice in full, beautiful force, and it provides respite from some of the harder tracks on the album.
It's fantastic to hear Elvis Costello on 'Carpetbagger', his voice adding something so entirely unique, you can't help but smile. Following this comes the ethereal 'Tryin' My Best' - a beautiful song that turns into something of a soul track.
'Jack Killed Mom' is the most lyrically familiar track on the album, if compared to her last solo, breaking down into something that could almost be a stones b-side.
If you're looking for 'Rabbit Fur Coat' version 2 then you won't find it here. If that record reveled in 'classic' american country, then Acid Tongue is an attempt to bring this sound into the now - and ultimately it succeeds:
